Why we made our encampment beautiful
An encampment, like any city neighborhood, draws support and investment when it is beautiful. This safety can be a lifeline for unsheltered communities.
We are the haunted, not the horrors
Unhoused people are too often viewed as the "horrors" of society. But the crisis of homelessness haunts the people who live on our city streets. That, in fact, is the true horror.
Why we made our encampment beautiful
The systems that brutalize unhoused and housing-unstable people are invested in stripping our subjectivity away. Creating and viewing art directly confronts this process.
We are the haunted, not the horrors
Science has now proven that trauma can be passed down intergenerationally; that rats whose mothers were exposed to stressors like water can epigenetically inherit a special fear of water. Before we had this science, nearly every culture on Earth had ghost stories.
