We’ve hurried past
the huddled homeless
heaped like potato sacks
along city sidewalks.

We never envisioned a saint
or savior might sleep
under plastic over cardboard
and a steaming vent.

One gloomy night,
after a street person trudged
into an alley in rain,
we saw footprints etched in light!
